The operating parameters of Thordoncn SXL segmented shaft seals are usually similar to those of carbon graphite or phenolic seals in terms of maximum interface pressure and minimum leakage rate. Thordoncn segmented shaft seals are designed specifically for shafts with diameters up to 2000 millimeters (80 inches). They can be designed for radial or axial sealing systems.

The main shaft seal of a water turbine typically operates under high PV conditions and may also be frequently exposed to abrasives in water. Thordoncn segmented shaft seal is a validated solution that can work in clean and abrasive water.

Thordoncn radial segmented shaft seals can operate under maximum sealing water pressure of up to 0.7 MPa (100 psi). For situations where the sealing water pressure is greater than 0.7 MPa (100 psi), it is usually recommended to use an axial sealing solution.

The leakage may vary depending on the shaft size, number of segments, segment processing accuracy, sealing water pressure, and shaft speed, but it will be lower than the equivalent carbon graphite segmented seal. For example, a radial segmented seal consisting of 6 segments operates on a shaft with a diameter of 400 millimeters (15.75 inches), with a leakage rate typically ranging from 10-20 liters per minute (2.6 to 5.2 US gallons per minute).
